What do I need to know regarding the operating system?

  • Installation under WIN 2000/NT:
    • In case the Domino server is run as Windows service, restart the operating system after installing iQ.Suite (as for Exchange/SMTP). This will set all environment variables required.
  • Installation under UNIX:
    • The installation has to be performed under "root".
    • A sufficient number of semaphores has to be available (refer to Manual).
    • Transfer the toolkit.lic in binary mode to the corresponding system.
  • General:
    • The notes concerning partitioned servers under UNIX (see next question) also apply to all other operating systems.

What are the basic requirements?

Make sure the latest service packs for your operating system have been installed. Prior to installation, check the processor performance, the size of the main memory as well as the disk space available (refer to the OS-specific section in the manual). We recommend to read the installation instructions before proceeding with the installation. We also recommend to set up the "temp" directory (iQ.Suite for Lotus Domino) or the "grpdata" directory (iQ.Suite for Exchange/SMTP) in a separate partition, in order to minimize the effects of attacks such as compression bombs (ZIP of Death).

How does the installation procedure affect current business operations?

As for other processes intervening in current operations, the iQ.Suite for Domino installation should be performed outside of normal business activities. To install iQ.Suite, the Domino server has to be shut down and is therefore unavailable during that time.
The iQ.Suite for Exchange installation can be performed without stopping the Exchange server and therefore does not affect current operations. An exception to this is an upgrade to Version 5.1 (see next question).

Can I run an upgrade from an older version?

  • iQ.Suite for Lotus Domino:
    • As a general rule, upgrades are possible within a major release. However, keep in mind that new features may affect existing settings or that existing configurations may not be compatible with the new version. This means that an upgrade may require adjusting the current configuration in order to be able to use new features.
  • iQ.Suite for Exchange/SMTP:
    • An upgrade from Version 3.0 and 3.5 to Version 4 is possible. So is an upgrade from Version 4 to Version 5.0/5.1. In the latter case, however, rebooting the system is absolutely required. As for Lotus Domino, the upgrade may require adjusting the current configuration.

Are licenses limited to one version and what happens after a Domino server upgrade?

  • Lotus Domino:
    • The installation files for the Domino versions 5.x and 6.x are not identical. The current version for Domino 5 is iQ.Suite 7.5, for Domino 6 it is iQ.Suite 7.6. When ordering a license, the Domino version has to be specified, i.e. a new license has to be requested when upgrading iQ.Suite.
  • Microsoft-Exchange:
    • iQ.Suite for Exchange can be installed under both Exchange 2000 and Exchange 2003. A license is required for the current version.
